South Africa

Owing to my humble service on the Whose Knowledge? board, I was graciously invited by the team to join them on their annual retreat in KwaZuluNatal, South Africa. It was a beautiful 10 days and I certainly hope it will not be my last time in South Africa. I have so much more I’d love to see and try! Thank you, WK?!
Mac Miller Tiny Desk
Thanks to the YouTube algods, I was served this edition of Tiny Desk by one of my faves (taken from us too soon) Mac Miller. It is such an absolute gem.
Insurrection In Energy Research
What is energy? Do we need it? And if so, what kind? These questions and more are posed in this excellent presentation/ discussion from EXALT/ University of Helsinki. It is long but super duper worth watching. I appreciate all its information, humor, irreverence, and provocation.
Kanaval by Leigh Gordon
Pioneer Works (an artspace here in Brooklyn) has a pretty great newsletter where they share updates about exhibits and also cool books they publish. The most recent one featured images from carnival in Jacmel, Haiti. Out of curiosity, I clicked to read more and I was immediately transfixed by images from Leah Gordon’s amazing book Kanaval. From the costumes to the stories, the legends, and everything that makes carnival carnival in that part of the world, I was totally bowled over.
Haiti was an inspiration for much of the diaspora for centuries. I do hope that the creativity and courage of the Haitian people will once again be celebrated on global stages.
