Gratitude July 2023

Every once in a while, I like to come here and type up a few things that I enjoyed recently. Here are a few.

Bloom

Hector and Ari, the main characters in Bloom

I am a sucker for queer YA graphic novels and will pretty much read anyone I can get my hands on. Bloom is nothing mind-blowing; it is just a sweet little boy meets boy story about two young men who meet one summer while working at one of the boy’s family bakery. Cute boys and delicious baked goods — who could ask for anything more?

Cypress Hill on NPR’s Tiny Desk

Love me, love my love of NPR’s Tiny Desk shows. Always a vibe. As a late Gen Xer (don’t call me millennial!) and a Cali girl, Cypress Hill was a *critical* part of my youth. So I was grinning from ear to ear during this entire set. These dudes still totally got it.

Dr. Don Hoffman on Reality

Dr. Donald Hoffman is a cognitive scientist who writes and researches on the nature of consciousness. In this long (but GREAT and suuuuper worth watching) interview, he walks through some of the ideas from his book The Case Against Reality, in which he explains his theory that humans evolved in such a way that we cannot see reality because it would hinder our survival. Y’all if this dude is some sort of alt-right nightmare, lemme know. Because right now, I am loving everything that came out of his mouth about the nature of reality. He totally confirmed a lot of suspicions I have had about life and I will be forever grateful to him for introducing me to the idea of “fitness payoffs“.
